Format Requirements: 3-3 ½ pages long, double spaced, Times New Roman size 12 font, standard margins, include a Works Cited page. *Use MLA sample paper in Syllabus as your format guide.

Due Dates (from our Syllabus):

  • Monday, Feb 13th- Rough Draft for Peer Review
    • Remember, you must come to class with 3 printouts of your rough draft in order to participate in peer review workshop to earn points. Make sure your draft contains all required parts of the assignment—an introductory paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, a conclusion paragraph, and a Works Cited page.
    • You can take your rough draft to the Writing Center at any stage of the writing process. An especially good time to go would be after our peer review. This ensures you’ll get help from your peers and a writing tutor before submitting the final draft.
  • Wednesday, Feb 15th- Final Copy Due in Class! Bring a hard copy and a digital copy. Please staple your work.

Topic: Choose one poem from the reading assigned so far in the semester that challenges or deepens your understanding of family relationships. Focus on one aspect of family relationships to explore in detail in your paper. The possibilities include—but are certainly not limited to—the mindsets/beliefs you have inherited from the older generations of your family, understanding the behaviors of parents through reflecting back on your childhood, and the depth of family bonds. How has what we’ve read so far in the semester helped you see your chosen aspect of family relationships in a new way, or strengthened how you already see it?

Defining the Response Paper: The response paper asks you to access and appreciate a work of literature by relating it to personal experiences. In our Close Reading Steps and Journals so far, there have been prompts that ask you to connect the speakers’ experiences to your own. Return to that writing to help you find examples to use in this assignment. While personal anecdote will be an important part of the paper, your interpretations of the poem’s meaning, that is, what you think the author was going for, will be even more important. You will use brief quotes in every body paragraph as you reference the poem, and you will need to explain your interpretations of what those quotes mean. After quoting and interpreting, you should explain how your experience relates to those found in your chosen poem.

Content Requirements; Outline for Paper One:

1.      Introductory Paragraph (make this paragraph at least a half-page long)

a.       Introduce and explain the aspect of family relationships you will explore in your paper

b.      Introduce the author of your chosen poem

c.       Thesis Statement—made up of a subject (what you will write about) and focus (what you will do with your subject)

d.      Essay Map—the three major topics you will cover that support and illustrate your thesis

2.      Three (3) Body Paragraphs (make each body paragraph at least a half-page long)

a.       Topic Sentence—in the order listed in your Essay Map—should state what you will cover in your body paragraph.

b.       Textual Example—Example(s) from your chosen poem in the form of a brief quote or paraphrase of a specific place in the text.

                                                               i.      After your quote/paraphrase, always explain your interpretation of what it means and why it is significant

ii.      Remember to repeat this process of quoting and interpreting for each quote/reference you include

c.        Personal Example—Example(s) from personal experiences/perceptions

                                                               i.      Needs to clearly explain how your experiences/perceptions relate to the textual example(s) you used above; this segment will be shorter than your interpretations

d.       Closing Sentence: explain how the above supports/illustrates your thesis statement

3.      Conclusion Paragraph (at least a half-page long)

a.       Instead of summarizing what you just wrote, emphasize your ideas by broadening the context of your discussion, by declaring the importance of your ideas in connection with our lives, or by expanding further on your thinking.

4.      Works Cited page–On its own page titled Works Cited, list the author and publication information of our textbook and your chosen poem in correct MLA format (which can be found in your textbook and which we will go over in class.)
